Display of books in LACC

LACC has more than just books and resources for your classes and research. We also have a growing collection of YA and graphic novels in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The books in this display were all recently purchased and are set in Florida. Many highlight the Cuban diaspora and take place in Miami. These two have Gainesville connections!

Breath and Count Back from Ten by Natalia Sylvester

Verónica is entering senior year and dreams of becoming a mermaid at Mermaid Cove in Central Florida but knows her over-protective Peruvian parents will not approve. Check this book out if you like mermaids, swimming, or a story about figuring out who you are and standing up for yourself. There’s also a bit of romance. Author Natalia Sylvester lived in Gainesville between the ages of 9 to 11, so see if you can find the local references.

La Primera Regla del Punk/The First Rule of Punk by Celia Pérez

This book was written by UF graduate Celia Pérez and was a 2018 Pura Belpré Award Honor Book. LACC has the Spanish edition, and you can read the English version as an eBook (you need to be on VPN if off campus). María Luisa (or Malú as she prefers) is entering the 7th grade and moves from Gainesville to Chicago when her “SuperMexican” mom gets a visiting professor fellowship. She loves punk music and making zines as a way to express herself. You can see an image board and listen to the playlist that goes with the book on Celia Pérez’s website.

Come to LACC and pick out a fun and relaxing read to start off the semester!
