Dia dos Povos Indígenas is celebrated annually to recognize the diverse histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Brazil. It is also an effort to combat stereotypes and create awareness of Indigenous rights.

In a 2022 census, the national statistics agency IBGE found that there are 1.69 million Indigenous peoples in Brazil representing about 305 groups.
